Abstract

Compared to their counterpart in the West, business leaders in Asia are more authoritarian and use more personal relationships to govern. This chapter discusses the cost and benefit of relation-based management in comparison with the rule-based management practiced in the United States. It highlights four scenarios of working relations between managers and employees in a rule-based and a relation-based environment, and offers strategies to deal with each scenario.
