Abstract

Mean values of nitrate ion concentration CNO3, electric field intensity Eo, field reversal frequency fE and rainfall intensity R for rain events monitored at Ibadan and Calabar located in the rain belt of Nigeria are shown to fit a relation of the formCNO3-=AE0βR-ηfEγ,which is derived semi-empirically. The results suggest that electrical discharges are the major sources of NO3 in tropical rains. NO3-N concentrations and deposition rates for rains at the two stations are presented in relation to those for other tropical and sub-tropical areas.
